What exactly is shortening? I have tried to find it in supermarkets but with no avail. What are the makes? Am I just missing it or doesnt everywhere sell it??
Shortening is any fat that is solid at room temperature. shortening is what we in Mexico call "Manteca vegetal". Lard is animal fat and sometimes it have aaaaalittle flavor, so I recommend if you are baking or frosting to use Manteca Vegetal.

Shortening? by: Anonymous
That's so cute. I can sure tell you're not from the south! We use crisco in EVERYTHING. Frying, baking...even biscuits and icing! It comes in a round container and is usually with the liquid oils. You can even get it in BUTTER flavor!

Alternative to shortening by: Anonymous
Crisco is shortening. An alternative to shortening is lard (animal fat as opposed to vegetable fat)!
