Most baby shower cakes are rendered in pastel colors. When designing them with buttercream icing, liquid food coloring is fine to create these subtle shades. Use only food color paste with fondant.
Traditionally, when the gender of the baby is unknown, the colors scheme includes both pink and blue. When using multiple colors, you can also add in pale shades of green, yellow, lavender and acqua.
For a non-traditional look, bright colors in cake decorating can be quite exciting! See some of the terrific ideas contributed by cake decorators fron all around the world.(Scroll to bottom of page).

Some themes that work for either gender are stork cakes, baby carriage cakes, booties cakes, and teddy bear cakes.
Nowadays, many mothers choose to learn whether they are having a boy or a girl. In that case, you may want to create a cake that is distinctly masculine or feminine.

Christening cakes typically feature a cross with the saying "God Bless (child's name)". Some other Christening cakes ideas include depicting doves or simply creating a cake with either pink or blue flowers.
On baby's first birthday, you can depict nursery rhymes, cartoon characters, and toy themes.
