Cat Birthday Cake
Decorating Ideas

cat-cake

Our family cat, Nickel, was the inspiration for these birthday cake decorating ideas. All of the kids at my daughter's 8th birthday party went nuts when they saw this cake.

Many birthday cake decorating ideas can be quickly rendered by purchasing a novelty cake pan. This saves the step of cutting the cake into shapes and guides you with an impression on the surface of the cake. When you can't find a pan to suit your needs, you can always cut the cake into a shape with a sharp knife.

The cat's head is created by shaving layers of cake off a little at a time with a knife and building up the features of the face with fondant. The trick to carving the cake without it falling apart is freezing it first.

If you prefer to change the color of cat cake, you can tint the buttercream icing any shade. I chose to use food coloring spray simply to save on time needed for coloring icing and using separate pastry bags.

Here are the supplies you will need to recreate these birthday cake decorating ideas:

  • 12" cake board
  • sharp knife
  • 3 skewers
  • toothpicks
  • Wilton black food color mist
  • paste food color, pink & green
  • Black food writer
  • 6 flower stamens
  • tips #2,4,233
  • buttercream icing
  • confectioner's sugar
  • 1 lb. fondant
  • cake baked in a 12" bowl
  • cake baked in a 2-cup glass pyrex measuring cup (frozen)

Optional birthday cake decorating ideas:

I cut this cake in half by placing toothpicks all around the side of the cake to act as a cutting guide. Then, I used a serrated knife to cut along the toothpicks while turning the cake. The top layer was slid onto a flat baking sheet while the cake was filled, then slid back on to of the bottom layer.

It's not necessary to crumb coat this cake since it was designed to have a fur texture.

Tail and Feet:

Cat's feet & tail
Create a tail using about 1/3 lb. fondant. Roll it in your hands to create a long log, about 1-1/2 inches thick. Place it on the cake board, up against the cake. It will wrap about 1/3 of the way around the cake.

To make the back paw, roll a ball of fondant, about 1-1/2" wide. Pinch in one side into a point. On the other side, use a butter knife to make 2 indentations, up and down. Press the narrow end of the ball up against the bottom of the cake, close to the end of the tail.

Roll 2 one-inch balls of fondant to create 2 front paws and repeat the steps as for the back paw. These are placed about 2" apart of the opposite side of the tail.

Assembling the Cake:

I actually had a family member hold a cat so I could look at his face. No family cat? Use a photo or find other birthday cake decorating ideas for your cat cake from a children's book.

2-cup cake for cat's head

Shaping cat's head
When you turn the 2-cup cake on its side, you'll see that the smaller end will form the front of the face. It needs to be narrowed all the way around.

Decide which side will be the top. Starting from the top, wide end of the cake, go back about 1 inch to begin cutting down to about 1/2". This is the eye From this point, cut out towards the narrow end of the cake. Turn the cake as you continue cutting on an angle to narrow the snout area.

Assembling cat cake

When you are happy with the results, hold the cat head above the cake to determine how long to cut the skewers.(The head will be placed off to the side of the bowl-shaped cake). Cut the skewers about 1/2" shorter than the height of both cakes together.

Insert the skewers into the bowl-shaped cake and place the cat head on top. Make sure the head doesn't wobble. If it doesn't, insert additional skewers until it is stable.

Birthday cake decorating ideas for the cat's face:

Roll a piece of fondant about 2" long and 1/4" wide to form the nose. Place this piece of fondant in the middle of the cat's face, so it begins up between the eyes and ends at the end of the snout. If needed, create more depth to the forehead by placing a strip of fondant across, perpendicular to the nose.

Create 2 ears with 2 pieces of fondant about 2" thick. Form a pyramid with each one in the palm of your hand. Use the knife to indent one side, creating the inside of the ear. Place 2 toothpicks in each ear to position them in the top of the cat's head.

Creating cat's fur
Fill a pastry bag with white buttercream icing, medium consistency. Use tip #233 to squeeze "fur" out all over the cake, tail, and head. On the body of the cake, I squeezed out the fur to 1/2" long. The fur on the face is much shorter, about 1/4" long. The ears were left uncovered.

Above each paw, make the legs stand out from the fur by creating a second layer of fur in the shape of the leg.

The eyes:

Fill a pastry bag with pink buttercream icing and use the #4 tip to fill in the inside of the ears, draw a nose, and pipe the mouth.

Switch over the the #2 tip to pipe the cake saying.

Create whiskers by snipping off the ends of the flower stamens. Push 3 into each side of the cat's face, near the nose.

For other birthday cake decorating ideas on this cat, you can create a collar with a strip of fondant rolled to 1/2" wide, then decorate it with candy (such as M&M's) using a little icing to make them stick to the fondant.
