New Product Reviews - July '15
My name is Mark and I am a cake toy addict. There I have said it. I should be on one of those reality shows for my addiction. If it’s new, I need it. I may not have a current use for it, but I need it. I don’t love or even like all of the things I get and eventually try. However, there are three recently that I feel I need to share with you.
Fondant Dryer by CakeStructure – similar principle to a food dehydrator, the double fan/plexi-glass box combo will speed up the drying process of your sugar pieces without them melting the way a dehydrator may do. The unit is collapsible making it perfect for travel. I particularly like this feature since I do travel to teach, it will help expedite drying time in class. The system is designed to fit a lifesize shoe and former, but comes with an insertable shelf for drying other pieces as well. It is very easy to assemble and the fans are very quiet. I’d give it 4.5 stars out of 5 simply because I’d like it to be a bit bigger to fit more inside
Edible Food Color by TruColor – powdered color that you mix with water to make gel color, paint or airbrush color. It is all natural and comes in many colors including a range of shimmer colors! The perks of the line are that a little goes along way and it is water soluble making it even more cost effective! I haven’t used it in an airbrush application just yet, but have used it as gel color in macaron batter (spring green resulted in a vibrant apple green) and it really sold be as a paint application. Normally I mix gel color with alcohol to paint withand it takes a minimum of 2 or 3 coats to get a result I am happy with. Using TruColor, I was happy after the first coat! 5 out of 5 stars for ease of use and final result.
Sugar Shapers by Innovative Sugarworks – sculpting tools made with cake artists in mind. These have been out for a while, but I can’t get enough of them! They have made me truly enjoy sculpting and figure work. Available in firm and soft grip options, there are 6 tools with double heads to give you more bang for your buck. The tools are ergonomically designed and have a very comfortable grip – no wonder they are the favorite tool of cake decorator extraordinaire Kaysie Lackey! I’m giving them 4.5 out of 5 stars because I really want a mini version of them - which I am told are on the way soon!!
I really hope I have encouraged you to try some of these new products – not only are they cool and changing the way we decorate, but they are going to make your decorating lives that much easier!
