Buttercream icing and fondant

When using fondant, must the icing used under it be buttercream, or will regular store bought icing work just as well?

why not whipped cream?

My neice wants whipped cream frosting, and fondant on her wedding cake, which I'm making, and it never occured to me that this was a bad idea. Why? I personally don't want to do whipped cream frosting anyway; it's just too bland for wedding cake in my opinion.

Any butter or shortening based frostings will be fine. Whipped cream will not.
