Covering a round cake with fondant.

I know this probably sounds stupid and believe me...it made me feel that way (X's 2!)but I tried my heart out trying to cover a round cake in fondant today. It seemed that I could never get the sides smooth without having a ton of bunched up fondant at the bottom. I couldn't get it cut off quick enough that it didn't start to tear.I wasted more fondant today than Wilton makes in a year! (Or at least it felt that way.) I've only covered 4 cakes in fondant and they turned out great! I just can't seem to find the trick for covering round cakes. Any suggestions? I appreciate any help!
