creating shapes with cake (construction/templating)

creating shapes with cake (construction/templating)

Hi, I'm wanting to create a birthday cake for a friend who happens to be a huge Star Trek fan. The design in my mind is in the shape of the badge insignia that is the symbol on the Star Trek characters' shirts.

I'm thinking that I'll need both round and rectangular cakes to use to construct the image, but is there good technique for constructing elaborate images like this?

First, I always use sheet cake pans for carving. {1/2 sheet to be exact}. Get on the internet to find the shape you're looking for. Print the shape; take the print to a copy shop and copy in the size you need for the cake. Lay the copied print on a piece of thin cardboard and trace the shape. Cut out the shape; lay the cutout on the cake and carve. If the cake is going to have more than one layer, fill and layer it before you do the carving. Good luck!
