Cubs Baseball Jersey and Hat
This cake was made for the Cubs Little League baseball team in Kingsbay, GA. The coach gave me the jersey and the hat to use as a model. This cake was made in three separate pieces. The jersey was constructed from one 9x13 vanilla and one 9x13 chocolate sheet cakes. After the cakes completely cooled I cut off the tops to make it completely flat and level, and then sliced it width wise again so I would have two layers of chocolate and two layers of vanilla. I then stacked chocolate, vanilla, chocolate, vanilla with homemade buttercream icing between each layer. Then I cut off all the sides so the four layer of cake would be flush with each other. I crumb coated the cake and let the frosting dry. While the crumb coating dried I rolled out a piece of blue colored, white chocolate fondant I had made two days earlier. Then I applied another thin layer of fresh butter cream to the cake and placed the rolled fondant over the cake. I took some more fondant and shaped it into the collar and buttons of the jersey. I painted the little leagues team logo to match the real jersey and attached it to the cake by painting a thin coat of royal icing to the back of the logo. I did exactly the same thing to make the baseball hat except I used round cake pan and hand carved the cake into the shape of the hat. Once I got it frosted and the fondant put on I took a little tool that looks like a pizza cutter and embossed the stitching on the hat. For the bill of the hat I used fondant and cut it to fit the rest of the hat, and embossed it to match the rest of the hat. For the baseball I did the same thing as the jersey and the hat. I had to hand carve the baseball into the shape and size I wanted. I then covered it with plain white fondant and painted the baseball stitching. For the red boarder I rolled out some red fondant and outlined the entire base of the cake with it. And walla you have this baseball jersey and hat cake.
