I am a pretty experienced "hobby" decorator.
Number #1 Don't use icing sugar to roll out your fondant. Use Corn Starch. Much easier to work with.
You can steam, but be careful, too close and fondant will melt.
You could use Luster dust, or Pearl dust. Bought at any cake supply or Michael's.

To give fondant a shinier look, I've heard professionals use a steamer on the surface. Actionally, I'm an addict of the TV show "Cake Boss," and that's how they do it. Hope that helps.
