Frosting tips please

Frosting tips please

I am making about 150 small double decker heart cakes using cookie cutters to cut them out of sheet cakes. I've done a couple of test runs but am having trouble trying to figure out how to frost the sides without getting crumbs in the frosting. I was thinking perhaps if i soften the frosting by heating it? Any tips are appreciated.

piping NEW

Use a piping bag and pipe an even layer on the cake and smooth lightly you will have less contact with the cake if you pipe the frosting on. Cake boss Buddy was on Rachel Ray and that was his answer when asked

Crumb Coat

Your best bet would be to do a crumb coat on them. Then you don't have to worry about crumbs showing. Put a thin layer of frosting, refrigerate and then do a 2nd layer.
