Help covering a sphere with fondant.

Help covering a sphere with fondant.

Hi. I'm preparing to make a Teapot cake for our twin girls' birthday. I'd like to use fondant to get a nice smooth finish, but have never used it before. I'm a fairly experienced decorator otherwise. Am I being too ambitious to jump into fondant on a sphere? Do you have any tips for doing this smoothly...and what NOT to do? Thanks for any help you can provide.

Hope this helps. NEW

When I covered a "planet" cake, I found that rolling the fondant out thicker helped. This way, there aren't as many "pleats" to smooth out. :)

Covering a Sphere
by: Kiryn's Mom

I'm not sure I can be of much help. I am very experienced with fondant but have never done a sphere until today. I am making Cinderella's Carriage for my daughter's first birthday tomorrow. I had seems on my first layer; I;m not sure there is any way to avoid them though. Aside fom a sphere, fondant is pretty easy to work with. If you are going to color it, make sure you use gel coloring. work it in just like you are kneading bread dough. Roll it out using powdered sugar (to prevent it from sticking to the pin and table) until it is about 1/8-1/4 thick. Next roll the fondant onto the rolling pin like you would pie dough and drap gently over your cake. Smooth it from top to bottum. Good luck, and let us know how it turned out!
