how to cover a chocolate wedding cake

My daughter has asked me to make a chocolate cake, vanilla sponge and traditional fruit cake for her wedding. She wants all 3 decorasted to look the same with white fondant icing. Please can you tell me how to cover the chocolate and sponge cakes with the fondant. Does marzipan have to be used? I am concerned that a layer of this plus the fondant will be too sweet - are there any alternatives you could suggest. Thank you

to put fondent on simply roll out 1 peice of fondent thinly [it has to be bigger than the cake before laying the fondent on the cake apply a thin layer of butter cream frosting then put rolled out fondent on cake and smooth fondent with your hands softly and at bottem for leftover fondent take pizza cutter and cut off leftover fondent

Brilliant - just the information I needed. Thank you so much! Just one query - by chill, do you mean put in the refrigerator or in the freezer?

I don't use marzipan because it is made from nuts {almonds}. Some people can't eat nuts or are allergic to them. I chill my cakes, then cover them with a thin layer of buttercream. {crumb coat} Then chill again about 15 minutes; cover with fondant. Hope this helps!
