Icing a birthday cake

I have made a few birthday cakes and have come accross the same problem each time, bumps. I always use a sponge recipe and when it comes to icing it (no matter how thick i do the icing) it seems to appear lumpy, is there something that im missing in between the icing and the cake? (i use ready to roll icing)
