There are many things to consider when preparing to make a kids birthday cake:

  • cake ingredients
  • experience
  • techniques
  • time

Professional cake decorators have everything at their fingertips and are not involved in the party planning. Many have teams who greatly contribute to the successful execution of elaborate, time-consuming cakes. If you are making a party and making you child's cake, you have a completely separate set of circumstances to consider when planning the type of cake you make. You will find a broad range of techniques for every kind of kids birthday cake when you surf the internet, but the one you choose to make should depend on your own situation.

Finding a theme is not so difficult -- you know what your child's interests are. I often refer to a picture book or the box a toy came in for design ideas. These days, any photo can be found on the internet.

So, what are the major concerns for having your kids birthday cake come out successfully?

Who is the audience? If the cake is to be eaten by children only, they often prefer the standard yellow or chocolate cake recipe with either buttercream or chocolate icing. The time your cake will take to make varies with the number of colors you'll need to tint the icing and how complicated your details are.

All decorating mediums are effected by heat and humidity; therefore, you should consider whether the cake is being served indoors or out.

If you are feeding company with a more sophisticated palette, you may prefer to fill the cake with mousse or pudding, or another filling that may require refrigeration. I personally prefer to make my cakes as tasty as possible, and need to return my cake to refrigerator before the filling softens. If the filling softens up on you, the layers will slip and slide, wrecking the finish of the sides of the cake and possibly making your cake crooked.Any cake requiring refrigeration should not be covered in fondant, as fondant will become sticky and loose its attractive finish if placed in the refrigerator.

Once you get passed the decision about your cake ingredients, the question is " how much time do I have?" Are you cooking for the party or bringing the cake to a party venue? If you are planning the whole party, you'll likely be cooking and cleaning feverishly beforehand, so the mess that goes along with cake decorating can become overwhelming. Keep your cake simple to avoid being rushed to finish the cake. You can find many character theme pans with coordinating candles, goodie bags, and decorating color kits at Candylandcrafts. The quickest way to put a cake together is to use a birthday cake topper or an edible cake image. This is not the ideal time to try out new techniques nor to imitate a complicated professional-style cake. It can be stressful!

Kids Birthday Cake Ideas:

If the party is taken care of by a party place, you can focus your attention on the cake. Stick with the techniques you are familiar with to reduce time spent cake decorating. You can pull off a very intricate, artful cake by making either gum paste or royal icing decorations in advance. They will keep in an airtight container for a few weeks. The day you make the cake, all the hard work has already been done, and assembly becomes a breeze. You can even purchase pre-made royal icing flowers to place on the cake.

Another idea, which always works well, is to draw a picture on the cake with piping gel. I just look at a picture and draw it on the cake with a toothpick. Then, I follow the etched outline with black piping gel. Most kids birthday cakes are cartoons, which are outlined in black, so this technique is effective. When you fill in the outline with the other colors, there is no smoothing out to do. The gel always looks flawless and it's so easy.

If you're not confident in your artistic abilities, you can trace a picture on to a piece of parchment paper.Lay the parchment paper sketch on top of the cake and trace along the outlines with a pin.

Good luck and have fun making your kids birthday cake!
