Ladybug Cake

This ladybug cake was so simple to make. The decorating process only took 1-1/2 hours from start to finish and the clean-up was a breeze!

Ladybug Cake

Ladybug Cake Supplies:

1 rectangular cake board
1 cake baked in a 9" pyrex bowl
1 cake baked in a 5" pyrex bowl
buttercream frosting
black & red paste food coloring
1 lb. fondant
2 pipe cleaners
shot glass or circle cookie cutter
rolling pin
pizza cutter
wax paper
knife
confectioner's sugar

Cutting the Ladybug CakeCut one side of each cake straight across so they can be placed together. Place 9" cake on the cake board. Place 5" atop 2 pieces of wax paper on other side of board. This will allow you to pull it over to the 9" cake easily, once the fondant is in place.

Frost each layer with buttercream to fill in any imperfections in the cake and to make the fondant adhere to the surface.

Pinch about a 2" ball of white fondant off to hold aside for the eyes. Divide the remaining fondant in half. Color one half red and the other half black. This time is an exception with the food coloring - use generous amounts. In order to attain vivid colors, quite a bit of paste will need to be added. It will make the fondant a little sticky, so dust your hands with confectioner's sugar while kneading the color in.

Roll the red fondant out into a 13" circle on a surface dusted with confectioner's sugar.

Fold over the rolling pin and center the rolling pin over the 9" cake. Smooth the fondant over the top and down the sides.Press the fondant close to the base of the cake. Carefully trim off the excess with the pizza cutter. Using the back of a butter knife, indent a line down the cake to represent the division of the ladybug wings.

Ladybug Cake bodyDivide the black fondant in half. Roll out to an 8" circle as instructed for the red fondant and place on top of the 5" cake. Repeat as above.

Assembling the ladybug cakeThe surfaces of both cakes will be dull from the confectioner's sugar. Dampen a paper towel and gently wipe down the fondant of both cakes. This will bring back the color. Pull the 5" cake over to the 9" cake until they meet and remove wax paper.

fondant ladybug cakeRoll out the remaining black fondant to 1/4" thick. Using a shot glass or cookie cutter, cut out 10 circles. Lift away excess fondant. Lift each circle with a knife. Add a dab of water on the back of each circle and place on ladybug cake as shown in photo.

Roll out the piece of white fondant to 1/4" thickness. Cut 2 eyes out with a knife. Adhere to 5" cake with a little water, as shown.
Make 2 small balls with the black fondant, then flatten them. Apply to the eyes. Roll out a small piece of red fondant, about 2" long, to make the mouth.

Cut 2 pipe cleaners to desired length. I wrapped the ends around my finger to make them curl. Simply poke them into the cake as shown.
