Use the kitchen paper technique. Simply take a kitchen paper towel not printed,or printed if desired place it on you cake after the icing crusts and with a fondant smoother, iron you cake. Don't press too hard,so you don't move the icing around. Do the same for the sides. To achieve sharp edges use 2 fondant smoothers... ENJOY DECORATING

This is the way I was taught to smooth cakes. The vive paper towels work the best because they are already so smooth.
