Rocket Cake

Rocket Cake

We started with a quarter slab of mud cake. Start by turning the cake so the long sides are vertical not horizontal. Then we cut from the top of the cake down about a quarter of the way down (the cut off pieces will form the jet part of the rocket).

We assembled the cake using icing to stick the pieces together. You may need to put some toothpicks through the sides for support of the jets - just remember to take them out.

We used a buttercream icing for the cake and just used food colouring for the different colours.

We iced the cake, as in the picture, and smoothed it out by placing a piece of kitchen paper over the icing once it was crusted over.

We then placed jelly beans to break up the different colour segments, placed a picture on the cake (laminated) of the birthday boy and a lolly snake border around that and then some sugared lolly bananas on the jets. We then put some sparklers coming out the bottom.

Hi there, that rocket cake looks amazing. My son is right into planets and space at the moment so I thought a rocket cake would be a great one for the party. I know you said that you used food colouring for the icing, but I can never get my colours to turn out that vibrant - how did you manage it? Thanks for the great design.
