Heather's Buttercream Icing

Heather's buttercream icing is essentially a crusting buttercream recipe. Crusting buttercream gets a hard surface after about 10 -15 minutes which allows you to use the paper towel method to smooth the surface of the icing.


1⁄2 c
butter (softened)
1⁄2 c
vegetable shortening (or margarine)
1⁄2 t
Vanilla Extract
1⁄2 t
butter flavoring
1 T
1 T
meringue powder
4 c
confectioners sugar


  1. Cream butter and margarine (or shortening) together until smooth.
  2. Add in vanilla and flavoring.
  3. With mixer on low setting, add in icing sugar, meringue powder, and then add in milk until desired consistency (you may want to add more icing sugar depending).


And voila! A delicious icing perfect for filling, decorating and icing cake!
*If you don't have meringue powder, it will still turn out great...it just won't crust over at all.
